Modoc County is the northeast corner of sunny California. It still has the old west frontier feel from not having the population expansion dissolving the land. Modoc is a rectangular shape and includes some 4000 square miles. Its northern border is the state of Oregon, and to the east, Nevada. The Warner Mountains run north and south separating Surprise Valley from the Pit River Valley. The Eagle Peak is the top of the Warner Mountains, touching the sky at 9,935 feet. Alturas is the county seat. Smaller communities include: Davis Creek, Surprise Valley, Lake City, Cedarville and Eagleville. Some communities more to the west are: Canby, Newell, Adin, Day and Lookout.
